Sounds

I heard the owls hooting in the dark.
I heard the sheep bleating beyond the hill.
I heard the wolves howling beside the graveyard.
I heard the sparrows squaking on the tree.
i heard the dogs barking outside the kennel.
I heard the horses neighing in the stable.
I heard the bulls snorting in the farm.

Poem Analasys :)

Poem Assignment

For the Poem Analasys,I chose snapshot land as it reached out to me the most

Snapshotland

By Sylvia Kantaris

In Snapshotland everyone is happy all the time.
It is the promised land where people sit with flasks of tea
On smooth sand by a flat sea and smile and smile and smile.

The sun shines all day long and every day in Kodachrome
Or sepia on sandboys and sandgirls who never
Stop smiling from the time they first appear, with buckets,
In crisp, gingham pinfores and nonnets on the sea-shore.

Lovers stay in love forever, married couples never
Grow tired of each other; everything is always just right.
The dolphins know exactly when to leap into the air
And stay there for the permanent delight of passengers
Aboard the pleasure-boat which never passes out of sight.

Noboday in Snapshotland grows old unless they want to,
Juding by the way they go on smiling so, in deck-chairs,
On the beach, or in old-fashioned gardens with lavender
And grandchildren here and there - and no one dies, ever.

Even if they don't appear later, the people are still
Always there, smiling through the lavender and dolphins
And the buckets full of pebbles on the same sea-shore.

Step 1: Forget what the poem may or may not mean, or what it may be about.

Step 2: Look at just the title and WRITE DOWN about half a dozen things that it suggests to you. Give literal meanings as well as other associations.

~Camera
~Perfect Paradise
~Record Happy Memories
~An Amusement Park
~Each Photo has a story

Step 3: Read the poem once quickly, and then several times more slowly. Try to hear the poem aloud in your head. DO NOT recite the poem aloud in class; if you must hear it aloud, read it quietly to yourself.

4. WRITE DOWN a list of all those things in the poem that force their attention on you or which catch your interest for any particular reason. This includes unusual/odd/striking words, rhymes, or repetitions/patterns/contrasts, etc

~Repetition of "smile and smile and smile"
~Sandboys and sandgirls who never stop smiling
~people sit with flasks of tea an smooth sand by a flat sea
~nobody in Snapshotland grows old

~alliteration -"same sea-shore"
~metaphor - "snapshotland is the promised land"

6.WRITE DOWN groups of words that may be thematically similar (for example, that all similes make reference to animals/death/plants, etc., or all the first words of lines are conjunction words, etc.). Don't worry about whether your groups of words seem silly or improbable; look at what you have observed and ask yourself: what is its significance?

~Everything is all the same forever just like their frozen
~There are alot of alliterations

7. Look at your lists, notes, and groups. Do you see any pattern taking shape? If so, WRITE DOWN this pattern.
~Every stanza has at least one word that is related to happiness
~Time is frozen in Snapshotland
~In Snapshotland, everything is perfect

8. Read the poem again and WRITE DOWN your intelligent guesses of what the poem may mean.
~The life in Snapshotland are in photos, the time is frozen, and it is in a perfect world there.

9. Answer the following questions:

Who is speaking in the poem? Is it the POET or a PERSONA?
~Persona

Who is the poem "spoken" to? In other words, who is the audience for this poem? Is it to a particular person, to the poet himself (reflective) or to the public in general?

~It is to the public in general

What is the speaker's attitude to this audience? Is it angry, sincere, joking, teasing, etc.?

~happiness

What is the POET's attitude to this audience? (This may be different from the speaker.)

~to better describe the picture without being very direct that it is describing a picture, not a scenario.

Why is the poem organized in the way that it is?
~Each line is long so that the reader would need to read it slower

What is the EFFECT of all the things you have written down in Steps 2-8?
~It makes the reader feel that Snapshotland is a paradise and everthing is perfect.

Book Review: Mr. Monk Is Miserable by Lee Goldberg

Summary

Mr Monk, together with his assistant, Natalie, goes to Paris for a break, and go sight seeing. Mr Monk had many phobia such as the fear of untidyness. Mr Monk surprisingly wanted to visit Paris Sewer Museum. They managed to find a skull that belonged to a man that was murdered. The skull later was discovered to belong to identified as belonging to Nathan Chalmers, a con artist from New York making money from the rich by getting them to invest in a fake business.

That night, they went to a special restaurant that all the waiters were blind and they ate there in pitch darkness. A lady came and wanted to tell Mr Monk abit more about the killer. Due to the chaos, the lady was stabbed in the dark.

The skull later was discovered to belong to identified as belonging to Nathan Chalmers, a con artist from New York making money from the rich by getting them to invest in a fake business.

My Thoughts

I feel that this book is extremely adventurous and interesting, there is also some unexpected parts in it. It is very exhilarating to find out who could the murderer is. I could not put down my book until I finish it. The book is also extremely hilarious at different parts of the story as Natalie had to deal with Mr Monks incredible nonsense. Mr Monk has a very "unique" personality that makes him look crazy in the eyes of the reader. I hope to read more of this series in future.

Tongue Twisters

Tongue Twisters are a part of poetry, that it takes skill and practice to be able to say them well and articulated properly

Some of my favourite classic tongue twisters :)

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
If a woodchuck could chuck wood?
He would chuck, he would, as much as he could,
And chuck as much as a woodchuck would
If a woodchuck could chuck wood.

A skunk sat on a stump and thunk the stump stunk,
but the stump thunk the skunk stunk

Imagine an imaginary menagerie manager
imagining managing an imaginary menagerie.

These Tongue Twisters are What I am going to practice for LA class :D

Poem : My Primary School Life

Six years of my Primary School life
It has filled my life with joy
from my friends and teachers
I really miss them

We made many friends
mixing around
fiddling around
spreading our laughter and joy
It was so much fun

Class was extremely interesting
"Me! Me!", we shouted
Raising our hand excitingly in the air
Everyone was fighting for the spotlight

"Ringgggg!" the sound of freedom
The next minute
The class was empty
The students start to crowd the canteen
Wolfing their food
Stuffing food down their throats hungrily
Lessons probably made us famished

Minutes before recess was over
We came back all drenched and untidy
"Students with unpresentable attire,
Please stand outside!"
We would receive a earful outside

"Goodbye Mrs Chan" we greeted cheerfully
Rushing out of the classroom
Creating a stampede at the corridor
Competing to be the first ones to leave school
That was the end of our day in school

I really missed the routine of my childish childhood life

Messy Room

Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
His underwear is hanging on the lamp.
His raincoat is there in the overstuffed chair,
And the chair is becoming quite mucky and damp.
His workbook is wedged in the window,
His sweater's been thrown on the floor.
His scarf and one ski are beneath the TV,
And his pants have been carelessly hung on the door.
His books are all jammed in the closet,
His vest has been left in the hall.
A lizard named Ed is asleep in his bed,
And his smelly old sock has been stuck to the wall.
Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
Donald or Robert or Willie or--
Huh? You say it's mine? Oh, dear,
I knew it looked familiar!

The author used figuritive language to exaggerate the dirtiness of the room before he actually realised it was his.

I like this poem because it is extremely humorous. There is also a twist at the end which made him regret all his remarks before. The description of the messy room is very visual and we can imagine how it looks like in our minds. This is also something we can relate to. Some times, our rooms are so messy until we did not realise we were responsible for it.

My Journey At Little India (IDS)

On the 5th of May, the entire Ortus Sec 1 went on a journey to Little India, learning more about the culture and taking pictures. The week before, we went to plan for the pictures and information required for our project to design a tour for the China YOG athletes. Mr Kong and Mr Tan, brought us to Little India and dispersed us beside the Little India MRT station.
My group which comprises of me, Teik Jun, Richmond, Wei Jian and Koh Ling Tian. We first went to Little India Shopping Arcade. We were surprised and amazed by the various kinds of souvenirs and knick-knacks. What intrest us the most was the Henna Painting. The Indian Lady carefully squeezed out the Henna on the person's hand. We looked at the book which contain all the designs that they made through henna painting. The designs were extremely beautiful and I wad told they even use Henna painting during Weddings.
After that, we went to the Sri Veerama Kaliamman Temple and Serangoon Road. The Temple was magnificent. There were many sculptures of people on the roof on the temple. The people told us the story "Kalamman the courageous". The temple was nicely build in the interior.
Next we went to visit Tekka Centre. It is a extremely large food centre. There were many Variety of food and Drinks. There were many stalls which had newspaper cuttings and awards. Tekka Centre had food from different Cuisine. If we were not there for the project, we would probably have a hard time choosing food.
We also went to Mustafa Centre. It a gigantic department store which sells many goods, ranging from Jewellery to clothes and stationery. The items sold there were extremely cheap.
Also during the journey we say different people and shops on the streets that are able to bring out the indian culture, such as the Fortune Teller and the Store selling Indian Snacks such as Murukku.
After this learning journey to Little India, the experience we got is far more that we can imagine compared to the internet, and we are able to find out so much more that can only be done if we are there to see it. In our website that states about the tour, we are able to present every single detail about each place we go. We were also able to tell the history for each place there. I feel that this Trip was fruitful and I can go to such learning journeys again.

Music: Ambient Music

I am going to choose 'Xela - Last Breath' . I chose this ambient music is because it has a emotional feeling when you hear it and it expresses the troubles Hari has faced in the first 5 chapters of the story.

Intrapersonal: Diary Entry of Hari

Dear Diary,
I am extremely stressed and angry. I am only 12 years old. Do I deserve this? I am the breadwinner of the family. My mum is extremely sick and is suffering from malnutrition. I cannot bear to see my mum getting abuse by the good-for-nothing pig.
My mum worked her heart out to provide for the family, but it was ruin because of my stupid father. He destroys pots and plates, beat us up, use up our last cent to buy toddy, this is infuriating. I really want to leave this city.

I feel that luck is beginning to turn when I met De Silva who cant understand me and gave me a job. Unfortunately, leaving here to Bombay is a very big decision. If I leave my family to work, my sister might not have the emotional support to continue, and there might be many family issues at home. But if I stay, my dad would torture me and we would be in debt due to his toddy addiction. I hope that whatever path I aam going to choose, will bring my family happiness. I hope that god will give me a sign on whether I should go to Bombay or remain in Thul.

How to make Chapathi:•Prepare dough by mixing together ½ cup of water with 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp ghee and just enough wheat flour.
* 1 cup of Wheat flour (can use wholemeal flour)
* 1/2 tsp salt (optional)
* 1 tsp ghee
* 65 ml of warm water
•Knead well.
•Keep aside for about 45 mins.
•Take some dough and make small balls - size half of tennis balls.
•Dust with wheat flour.
•Roll into chapatis on a rolling board.
•Ready the chapati tawa and keep on flame.
•Roast both sides of chapati on the tawa moderately.
•Ready to serve.
•Add ghee on top of chapati if needed.

The difference in how Chapathi and Roti Prata are made :

•Chapathi requires lesser oil that roti prata and is probably healthier.
•Roti Pratas are actually cooked without oil compared to Chapathi.

How to make Jalebi:
2 cups All purpose flour (maida)
11/2 tbsp fine grained semolina or rice flour
1/4th tsp baking powder
2 tbsp curd (plain yogurt)
11/4th cups warm water
1/2 tsp saffron threads, slowly dry-roasted and powdered
3 cups sugar
22/3rd cups water
1/2 tsp green cardamom seeds powder
11/2 tbsp kewra water or rose water
Ghee or vegetable oil for frying

How to make jalebi:
•Mix the flour, semolina or rice flour, baking powder, curd and 3/4th cup of the water in a bowl (preferably a ceramic bowl). Mix well with a whisk.
•Mix well and then add remaining water and 1/8th tsp. of saffron powder, and whisk until smooth.
•Set aside for about 2 hours to ferment.
•Whisk thoroughly before use.
•Prepare one string syrup by dissolving sugar in the water. Just before the syrup is ready add saffron and cardamom powder.
•Heat oil in a kadhai. Pour the batter in a steady stream ( or coconut shell with a hole) into the kadhai to form coils. Make a few at a time.
•Deep fry them until they are golden and crisp all over but not brown.
•Remove from the kadhai and drain on kitchen paper and immerse in the syrup.
•Leave for at least 4-5 minutes so that they soak the syrup.
•Take the jalebi out of syrup and serve hot.

The difference in how jalebi and you tiao are made :
•You Tiao uses more oil to fry than Jalebi
•Jalebi is dipped in sugar while You Tiao has no sugar content
•Jalebi is crispy while You Tiao is soft.
•Jalebi uses much more sugar content that You Tiao and it is more unhealthy.

Reason Why I Had Chose This Ending for "The Lady or the Tiger"

I wanted to express the strong love between these two people, so much that one rather seek death if he cannot meet her lover again. I also want to bring out the point that even the fiercest animals can be tame by a simple thing: Love.

4 creative ways to use a Lamb Leg

1st way: Using it to cook up a delicious dinner!

Ingredients

Marinade

1/2 cup orange juice
1 cup white wine
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons of fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon of dried thyme
2 Tbsp of fresh chopped rosemary or 1 Tbsp of dried rosemary
1/4 teaspoon of fresh ground pepper
2 Tbsp olive oil

Blend ingredients in a blender, just a few pulses until well mixed.

Lamb Roast

1 (6-pound) leg of lamb, bone-in or boneless. If boneless, the leg should be tied up with kitchen string by butcher.
Marinade
Salt
Method

1 Place lamb and marinade into a plastic bag. Squeeze out as much of the air as possible from the bag and seal. Wrap again with another plastic bag to ensure that the marinating lamb doesn't leak. Marinate for several hours, or overnight, in the refrigerator. Remove the lamb, still in its marinade bag, from the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before putting in the oven to help bring the lamb closer to room temperature before roasting.

2 Preheat oven to 425°F. Arrange two racks in the oven - a middle rack to hold the lamb, and a lower rack to hold a roasting pan with which to catch the drippings. Place the empty roasting pan in the oven while the oven is pre-heating. Note that this arrangement of racks and pans, with the roast sitting directly on the oven rack, will create a natural convection of heat in the oven, causing the roast to cook more quickly than if cooked the traditional method in a rack in a roasting pan.

3 Remove the lamb roast from its marinade bag (you may want to temporarily place lamb in another roasting pan, just to make it less messy to work with.) Pat dry the marinade off the lamb with paper towels. Generously salt and pepper all sides of the roast. Arrange fattiest side up, so while the lamb is cooking the fat will melt into the meat. Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the roast, not touching the bone if your roast is bone-in. Place directly on middle rack of the oven, with a roasting pan on a separate rack a rung lower, to catch the drippings. You may also want to put some water (a cup or so) in the bottom roasting pan, so that the drippings fall into the water instead of burning in the hot pan and smoking up your kitchen.

4 Roast at 425°F for 20 minutes. Then reduce the heat to 300°F and roast an additional hour (for a 6 pound roast), about 10-12 minutes per pound. If you are cooking a roast bone-in, the bone will act as an insulator and will require a longer cooking time than a boneless roast.

Note that the method of cooking directly on the oven rack will mimic a convection oven and the cooking time/oven temp needed will be less than you would need if you cooked the roast on a rack in a roasting pan. If you are cooking the roast in a roasting pan, rack or not, start the roast at 450°F and then reduce the heat to 325°F. Also, the shape of the roast will have an impact on the cooking time. Our roast was rather long and thin, so it cooked up fairly quickly. A thicker roast may take longer than expected.

At this point start checking the meat thermometer. Note that every time you open the oven door, you'll need 10 minutes or so to bring the oven back up to temperature, thus slowing down the cooking process. So, don't check too often. Remove from the oven anywhere from 130°F to 135°F for medium rare. Lamb should never be cooked until well done or it will be too dry. Let stand for 15-20 minutes before carving. Cut away the kitchen string and slice with a sharp carving knife, 1/2 inch thick slices, against the grain of the meat.

5 While the roast is resting, use a metal spatula to scrape up the drippings in the roasting pan. Use the drippings to make a gravy, or use just the drippings themselves to serve with the lamb.

Serves 8 to 10. Serve with some homemade mint jelly for an added treat.

2nd way: Use it to kill people (It is an unsuspicious weapon)

2 Basic Methods to swing a lamb leg
1) 'Desperate to kill someone' Method
Like in the video, position the lamb leg behind you and grip it hard, then swing it over your head and hit your enemy hard on the head.
2) "Immediate Death" Method
Use this method if you want to make sure that the chance of killing the person is confirmed to be a success. Take your stance, right elbow parallel to the ground, and your hands behind your back shoulder. Step towards the person and begin your swing to hit him straight on the head.

3rd way: Use it to practice your tattoos on before trying them on humans!

If a pig can be tattooed, why not a gigantic piece of lamb! It does not matter, as long is a large piece of meat to practice on! If it is alive, even better! You can boast about it to people!

4th way: Use pieces of lamb leg as bait for fishes (any size).
All of you might be wondering that I may be silly using good quality lamb for bait during fishing but the more fishes may not be able to resist the tenderness, the 'yummyness' of the savoring lamb. Probably we might even see people getting attracted by it!

The ending for the story 'the lady, or the tiger'.

He opened the door as if he entrusting his whole life to the princess. Everyone was in excitement, wanting to know his outcome. He did not think twice and twisted the knob. He loved the princess dearly and wanted her to decide which path to take. The door slowly creaked opened. A beautiful lady standing before him ready for his wedding. Tears from the young man's swelled eyes rolled down his cheeks. He stood there and stared striaght into the princess' eyes. The audience were cheering loudly to congratulate him. He smiled. He slammed the door hard. The noise echoe in the arena. He then walked over to the other door and opened it. Everyone gasped in shocked. The 300-pound beast pounced on him. The tiger started mauling the young man. Blood was practically splurting out from him. He had the strength to fend the claws of the tiger but he did not attempt shield himself at all. His actions mad the princess cry unbearably. He was killed in minutes. Just before the young man passed away. He shouted three heartfelt words,"I Love You". These words from this small individual occupied a large space in the princess heart. The man rather choose death than to not spend his life with who he truely love. As love consist of a single soul consisting 2 bodies. Love can never be formed if they cannot be together.

The Narrative Writing Test Paper are going to be Released Tommorrow!

The test that was done last week is going to be released. The butterflies in my stomach are fluttering anxiously... I prayed Yesterday that my marks would not be very low. I am extremely worried as Secondary School Marks are calculated differently from Primary Schools. Every Test grade is a part of our overall scores!

(Don't get this wrong. I am worried not because I did not study for the test)

Lamb to the slaughter

Dear Diary,
Today, I killed my husband satisfactorily. I was very lucky not to be caught by the policeman. They fell straight into my trap. They are not alert enough to look for evidence practically right under their noses. In the end, they unknowingly ate up their only evidence. After they had left, I was giggling uncontrollably at their foolishness,
Luckily I rehearsed my lines later that day. So when I went to the grocers, I was able to look not suspicious so that I could form an alibi. I must really thank the grocers for helping me prove that I was not at the murder scene.
Although I got my revenge on my unfaithful husband without any regrets, I still feel very unhappy. How could the man I slept with be such a terrible beast that left me in the dump! When it was only a few months to the birth of my baby, how could he had left me. Even if had hated me, how about his son? Now whether i did or did not kill him, I would not be able to survive with my baby in the harsh world without money. He should have thought wisely before marrying me. On the vow on our marriage, he took it seriously. However, he just broke that vow overnight. I don't really care about the wealth my husband gives me but it is the love that matters the most.
Yours Sincerely,
Mrs Maloney

Reflections about the questionaire on the website

I feel that this test allows me to know more about myself, if I am a people person, a Visual person, so on... It lets me to realise that I am better at understanding some things than others. I feel that it is quite interesting to know what inside personalities I have. This eight inteligence tells people about their complex human mind. I feel that it is important to know about our own thinking so that we can find methods of studying that can suit us.
